Much common advice on how to manage stress in life focuses on how to “de-stress” your life, minimize stress, and avoid or release tension in life. But if you want elite success, the answer is not about “how to live a stress-free life”- it’s about changing your relationship to stress.

Our society often sees stress and tension as a negative thing – poison, even – to be avoided as much as possible in life. But if you follow that logic all the way through and avoid all responsibility in life to avoid stress and tension, you’ll probably end up homeless…and actually facing a LOT of stress and tension on a daily basis just to survive, with very little freedom.

On the flip side, highly successful people tend to have a lot of responsibility and face a lot of tension-filled, potentially stressful situations and decisions. But they have a good relationship to stress, tension, and responsibility…and they also have a lot of freedom. So well-managed responsibility is freedom.

And, as Brian discusses in the video, a study showed that your beliefs about stress has the biggest impact on health and mortality, not how much perceived stress you have to manage. So the real key for how to manage stress in life is about re-examining your beliefs about stress…and slowly stepping into more stress and tension in a grounded, relaxed way.
