Brian talks about what it takes to be successful and why goals of a higher nature require the sacrifice of lower nature traits.

As Brian talks about in the video, an important principle he learned from success coach David Neagle is that you always need to give up something of a lower nature to get something of a higher nature.

It might be something physical or internal that you have to give up. Giving up time is one example. Slight Edge author and entrepreneur Jeff Olson realized that though he loved his adult softball team that was very successful, his business success goals were of a higher nature for him and he needed to give up all that time he was spending on the softball team to really get after those goals.

A deeper, internal example of something you might have to give up to be successful in your goals is limiting beliefs and stories you have about why you can’t do it, why you’re not good enough, or why “it’s going to be too hard.” As those stories come up, you’ve got to keep facing them and keep taking action in the face of those fears and other heavy emotions (especially Apathy, Grief, and Fear, but also Lust, Anger, and even Pride) little by little until the limiting belief or story fades away and disappears. Those beliefs are the lower nature.

So it starts with action – for example, not eating the junk food. But at a deeper level, it’s working on the beliefs about the junk food and yourself.

You may be so identified with some limiting beliefs and stories right now that you can’t imagine truly feeling any other way, but if you continually work on these things, you can totally shift your reality around them.
